Different groups are capable of wielding magic in the universe. This article is a discussion of how the nature of magic works. Minor spoilers may follow.
As Merlin teaches Jason Blood that there are different kinds of magic, and different schools, but they all come from the same guiding principle: Much like matter, magic cannot be created.
What is conventionally called magic is in fact a form of energy that exists in everything (both alive and inert), and it is this energy that is manipulated to create fire effects, wind effects, etc. The use of magic is essentially the capability of acquiring and then manipulating this form of energy to the user's needs.
Without proper training, wielding magic can be dangerous because the user is indiscriminate about WHERE they are acquiring this source of energy. A user could be draining their own life energy to accomplish the task, or they could wind up pulling that energy from somewhere in another dimension. In the latter case, this would involve opening a portal to that other dimension, which runs the risks of allowing whatever exists there to come into our dimension. This is the most common way, outside of a direct and intentional summoning, that demons escape into our world.
Most magic wielders use magic for offense against another, or in defense from attacks. But magic can be used to see beyond the surface and to track a person so long as you have a part of them, like hair or blood. It is also the means to exorcise demons. Magic use has only the limitation of the user's experience and imagination.
But there are differing degrees of magic as well, classified roughly and somewhat unscientifically as "lighter" and "darker". The lighter magics are indirect, siphoning the energy from objects while leaving the objects intact. The darker magics are more ritualized, and generally involve death and destruction of the object or person the energy is being lifted from. The darker magics are more powerful, but require more time and sometimes other objects to prepare. They are also more addictive, given the general addictive nature of power in general - the more one can wield, the more one wants to wield and the temptation to do more to get more can be overwhelming to those not properly schooled. The wise mages avoid the temptation altogether and caution against involvement in the darker magic. This is also emphasized in most schooling of magic.
Another factor to consider with magic is the wielder him or herself. While most appear to be all-rounders that are capable of performing a number of different magical feats, there are some people whose abilities are more specific, capable of focusing their magic in only one area, but at a superior level than someone with a more well rounded magic ability would be able to perform at. The Xebellians, with their ability to wield water magic would be an example of this phenomenon.
It is important to note that even expert magic is not completely foolproof, however. Even a long-lived sorcerer is not able to fully obscure him or herself from other people who are suitably alert just by using a spell. He or she must also do everything possible to limit the noise made as the spell cannot completely cover it up.
Known species with magical capabilities:
- The Greek Gods and their Titan antecedents are capable of wielding magic natively.
- This is also the source of the abilities of Arthur Curry (Aquaman) and King Orm
[li]The Atlantean people in general are capable of wielding magic, some to greater extent than others.[/li]
- The Tritonis based merpeople are capable of wielding magic natively. It has become a vital part of their culture and history, and is still used today.
- The Xebellians also appear to have limited magic use, capable of turning the water around them into a weapon. This is not something any other Atlantean subspecies appears natively capable of doing. It is unknown if they possess any further magical ability at this time.
- The Aquamen of Poseidonis and the Hidden Valley were taught magic by the merpeople of Tritonis after the sinking of Atlantis. It seems when Poseidon transformed the aquamen to adapt to the water, they were also provided the ability to use magic they did not possess while on land.
[li]Demons have different degrees of ability with magic[/li]
- Zenoin Demons are capable of using magic for possession. This is the limit of their natural abilities, but if a Zenoin possesses a person with greater magic capabilities, it is capable of tapping into that and using them.
- Homo Magi, an offshoot of the conventional Homo Sapien, is naturally capable of wielding magic
